The Sunlit Images Friday Wrap Up

Election Week! Did you vote? I did and then I shot for the Daily Journal in the evening, covering the results. I was firmly planted at the Johnson County Courthouse for 2 hours along with a reporter waiting to get a copy of the results. Fun eh? There were a few photos earlier in the day at the polling sites but overall it was a pretty low key election for me. I think through the Journal I’ve covered 4 or 5 elections + primaries over the years, and of all the stuff I’ve photographed for the Journal, elections are my favorite. We’re working on a deadline, remote transmitting, trying to find where the candidates are so we can join them, etc. I love it, seriously. There are some fun memories of working election nights with the staff and of long conversations after everyone has left the reception room and we’re still there editing and sending in images as the caterers clean up.

It’s been kind of a nostalgic period for me lately because I’ve also been working with a new group of friends at Goodwill. Over the years, the team has slowly changed and now it’s down to one person who was a part of the original crew that brought me in 6 years ago to shoot for them. The new staff is wonderful and just as enjoyable to shoot for, but I guess where I’m going with this is, I’m starting to notice larger and larger amounts of time passing without realizing where it has gone to.

Anyway, back on track. So a wrap up of the week – Sunlit captured the 230th graduating class from the Reppert Auction School on Tuesday. Congratulations you guys! It was a joy this morning photographing the Annual Goodwill Awards Ceremony – it’s great to see the recipients we photographed last month, finally receiving their awards, so congratulations to them as well! And from there I headed up to Chicago to photograph the adorable Eizley for her 4 month session! Photos soon – so, so sweet.

So that was my week! And tomorrow it’s a girls championship softball game in the morning for the Daily Journal and engagement pictures in Madison tomorrow night. Have a great weekend, I’ll have tons of photos to share on Monday!

In a digital age, there are benefits to shooting film, but what are they and why?

Fun and Adventure!

Capturing the day in both digital and film let’s us experiment and create images that are new and fresh, and by shooting them both seamlessly throughout the day, your wedding album will have a charming and timeless feel that’s warm and genuine. Whether it’s shooting Polaroids that you and your wedding party can see instantly, or film that is personally hand developed and scanned, film will definitely add a level of fun to your wedding day.

Warmth and Character

The depth and warmth of film is something that can’t be replicated with digital photography. There has to be a reason that so many purists still enjoy shooting film – and the reason is because film gives you more complexity and character in a photo, like the after taste of a wine, it’s subtle, but there adding to the overall feel and texture. Also, knowing that your images physically exist on film somewhere and not just in a computer, gives an extra layer of protection.

Depth and Beauty

Audiophiles who take their music seriously feel that digital has stripped away a layer of depth and beauty that analog music gives us. There’s now a trend within the music industry to go back to the warm, classic feeling that records and vacuum tubes gave us. These purists pay top dollar to purchase refurbished mid 1900′s era radios to bring back that beauty, and it’s the same feeling that film gives us. By shooting in digital we have the safety of knowing that your day is being captured perfectly while also giving us the freedom to capture it in the warm and traditional medium, called film. Film after all, is what made Paul Simon sing “Kodachrome, They give us those nice bright colors, They give us the greens of summers, Makes you think all the world’s, a sunny day.”
